Top 10 volcanic wines

8 – Hatzidakis 2013 Assyrtiko de Mylos, Santorini

assyrtiko-de-mylos-hatzidakis-600x600Pumice and igneous lavastone make up the terroir in this part of Santorini, where 100-year-old ungrafted Assyrtiko vines grow in an old monastery vineyard.

The grapes are picked extremely ripe and the must is fermented for one-and-a-half months months. Maturation takes place on the lees for seven months.

Mature fruit flavours, of lemon and peach, combine with an intense minerality. The finish is long and the acidity is remarkably balanced.

    Etna, Santorini, Tenerife, Pantellaria. I get these. But Alsace? Volcanic?

      There were two types of volcanic activity in the region: submarine in south Alsace, before the emergence of the VOsges mountains above sea level, and more recently in the Kaiserstuhl in Germany. The ashes and vocanic dusts sedimented in the sea and got compacted as the Vosges were pushed out of the sea in a rock called Grauwacke.

    I cannot believe that any wines from the Campania region was not featured! Greco Di Tufo, Lacryma Christi to name but 2.
