Burgundy exceeds estimates at Acker’s HK auction

Henri Jayer, Château de la Tour and Domaine Leroy all set new records, realising Acker, Merrall and Condit’s final sale of over $HK30 million.

A bottle of 1959 La Tache sold for HK$64,220.

The recent Hong Kong sale on 7 November by the New York auction house proved that Asia still has an undiminished demand for rare Burgundy, as the two-cellar auction “exceeded all expectations” led by Château de la Tour and Domaine Leroy.

Top five lots of the auction were all from Burgundy, the first four of which were Henri Jayer, and from the collection of Wilf Jaeger, marked by the sales of 12-bottle cases of 1996 and 2000 Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux, which sold for HK$642,200 and HK$543,400 respectively. A 12-bottle original wooden case of 2002 Domaine Leroy Romanée St Vivant finished the top five at HK$247,000.

A 2008 Nebuchadnezzar of Italian superstar, Masseto also sold high over its estimates and fetched HK$197,600.

“What an amazing day!  I can’t talk enough about the two star attractions, the cellars of Wilf Jaeger and Château de la Tour,” said John Kapon, Acker, Merrall and Condit’s Chairman.

“With the growing significance of the simulcast markets of Shanghai, Taipei and Tokyo, the Asian fine wine market is alive, well and growing, and still spending the most dollars, and we are thrilled to be at its forefront.”

Acker’s next sale will be in New York on 19 November, coinciding with Kapon’s birthday and the marking the company’s 150th auction.

The largest collection of the year auctioned by Acker will also be offered in the final Hong Kong auction on 12 December.
