Thai wines delight HKIWSC judges

Two Thai wineries were surprise winners at the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Competition, scooping three top trophies.

GranMonte’s Orient Syrah 2012 and Sakuna Syrah Rosé 2015 were named the best wines to pair with Gaeng Massaman (a mild Thai curry) and Grilled Unagi (eel) respectively.

Meanwhile Siam Winery’s Monsoon Valley Shiraz 2014 was named best match with Kaeng Phet Pet Yang (duck red curry).

Australian and New Zealand wines also did extremely well across this year’s HKIWSC competition including in the food matching category.

Debra Meiburg MW, founding director of the Cathay Pacific HKIWSC, commented: “I am fascinated at the terrific result for Thai producers – three trophies in the food and wine matching categories is a wonderful achievement and shows such promise for this emerging regional producer. Plus, Australia’s Pegeric Wines are back on the food and wine trophy winners list again in 2015, demonstrating such consistently food-friendly wines for this region, following wins with other dishes in previous years.”

She added that rather than pursuing the “safe” array of Asian dishes, this year’s competition had introduced, “not one but four Thai curries to the food and wine matching awards this year. Curries often present such a wine pairing puzzle – even those who feel confident pairing wine with a range of cuisines get intimidated by the temperature and spice complexity of curries. So much so, that many consider it a no-go-zone for wine. We at the Cathay Pacific HKIWSC set a mission this year to change this misconception for Thai cuisine chefs and enthusiasts everywhere.”

Other trophy winners in the Thai food pairing category were Torlesse Waipara Riesling 2010 with chicken green curry and Reginald Moscato Rosso 2015 with pork yellow curry.

Full results for the Cathay Pacific HKIWSC will be announced on 5 November, 2015 at the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair, held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center Wan Chai, hosted by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.
