Labour MP dies from vodka shots

A Labour MP died after drinking a shot of Polish vodka with each course of a meal while on a political visit to the country, an inquest has ruled.

MP Jim Dobbin

Jim Dobbin, 73, died last September after drinking a customary shot of the spirit with each course of his meal, as reported by The Independent.

Dobbin complained of feeling unwell but was encouraged by his colleagues to sleep it off, however his wife later raised the alarm when she was unable to wake him in the middle of the night. Mr Dobbin was rushed to hospital but died less than an hour after his arrival.

A postmortem found that the MP had a blood alcohol level of 399mg per 100ml – nearly five times the UK legal drink drive limit.

The meal, put on by the couple’s Polish hosts, includes a shot of Polish spirit with each course, a tradition observed at important meals.

Coroner Simon Nelson recorded death by misadventure.
