Upcoming Spink sale highlights in pictures

Spink auctioneers are offering collectors the chance to buy rare rums, whiskies, Cognacs and eaux-de-vies in bottle and cask at its next Hong Kong sale in July.

002. Grappa - Romano Levi - no (2)Taking place on 4 July, the auction covers over 100 lots of fine and rare spirits dating back to the 1940s and includes the chance to buy a whole cask of 1991 Macallan and a cask of 1991 Trinidadian rum.

Romano Levi Grappa (HK$5,000 per bottle)

Six original bottles of Romano Levi’s renowned grappa. Levi was famous for producing extremely limited amounts of grappa at his home in Piedmont and hand designing all of his labels.

Since his death in 2008, production of his grappa continues but the labels are no longer hand-drawn.

Each of the six bottles on offer next month are originals that pre-date 2008.

27-year-old, 1983 Port Ellen (HK$29,000)

049. Crystal - Port Ellen 1983 27yo

From the closed Islay distillery of Port Ellen, this 27-year-old Scotch is an absolutely unique bottling – the only one of its kind in the world.

The decanter was made in England and dates from 1890.

18-year-old 1974 Macallan with Jacobite glasses (HK$11,000)

106. Scottish - Macallan 1974 18yo (JacobiteGlasses)

A distillery-bottled Macallan with a set of two “Jacobite glasses”, a reference to the supporters of the Stuart family who were replaced as the monarchs of Great Britain by the Hanoverians in the 18th century.

Although not often very elaborate, these sorts of glasses are often engraved with Jacobite motifs such as roses and flower buds.

1976 Jura “Feith A’ Chaorainn” (HK$6,000)

091. Scottish - Jura 1976 Feith a Chaorainn

A 1976 vintage from the Jura Distillery released in 2011 after 35 years of ageing.

The bottle is number 341 out of a limited edition 500 bottle run.

The Gaelic Feith a’ Chaorainn means “the lands around the Rowan tree”, which refers to the tradition on the island that the Rowan tree brings good luck.

Jamaica Rum 1941 – 58-year-old (HK$40,000)

019. Rum - Jamaica 1941 58 yo

Distilled at the Long Pond Distillery in 1941 and aged for 58 years, this Jamaican rum was bottled by Silver Seal in a crystal decanter dating from around 1860.

Decorated with engraved foliage and the word “Rum”, this 90cl format is a “one of a kind”.

Hennessy, Nostalgie de Bagnolet (HK$35,000)

131. Cognac - Hennessy Nostalgie Bagnolet

A special edition Hennessy Cognac from the 1980s in a De Sevres crystal decanter with a presentation case depicting the Chateau de Bagnolet, the Hennessy family’s former home and now where the estate’s most distinguished visitors are received.
