The 7 silliest wine tastings ever screened

For those who thought wine tasting wasn’t a serious task requiring a refined palate and intense concentration we’ve compiled some of the silliest samplings ever conducted.

Featuring commedians from Alan Partridge to Sacha Baron Cohen, these tastings highlight the funny side of sampling something as gluggable and alcoholic as wine.

Such clips also explain why so few outside the wine trade find it hard to believe that tasting this liquid product is part of a proper profession.

7. Richard E Grant – Posh Nosh

Firstly, we bring you a reminder of Richard E Grant’s impeccable diction in this clip from noughties BBC comedy Posh Nosh.

“And on the finish, that characteristic hint of petrol, and I don’t mean that pathetic unleaded stuff, I mean good old fashioned four-star.”

6. Alan Partridge – wine tasting

The fictional radio and television producer Alan Partidge, played by Steve Coogan, brings his characteristic crass touch to a wine tasting live on air at North Norfolk Digital.

“That’s very for me… oh what is it… it’s very specific… This wine tastes of chewits.”

5. Frasier – Hail Cork Master

Wine appreciation is common on American sitcom Frasier – along with Dom Pérignon consumption – but this competitive tasting between the Crane brothers takes things to a new level.

“Prepare to be stomped like a late-harvest Gewürztraminer.”

4. Fry and Laurie – vox pops wine tasting

The pitfalls of blind tasting are amusingly exposed by 80s comedy double act Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie in this vox pop wine sampling.

“It’s a trick, they are both red… oh, that’s very good, but you won’t show this, I’m a wine merchant and I’ll get terrible stick at work.”

3. Absolutely Fabulous wine tasting

No-one expected Ab Fab’s Eddy and Patsy to spit, but the comic duo’s attempt to taste the differences at this sampling – and then try to drive – is impressive.

“Don’t snort it, just drink it sweetie.”

2. Sideways – Miles gets thirsty

Probably the most unsettling scene in any comic tasting comes when Miles swallows the contents of a spittoon in Sideways (which appears about 25 seconds into the clip below).

“Just give me a full god damn pour.”

1. Borat – Mississippi tasting

In possibly the most excruciating comic wine tasting ever produced, fictitious Kazakh journalist Borat Sagdiyev – played by Sacha Baron Cohen – samples wine in Mississippi.

“What is a grape? Is it like a small potato? Is it a peanut? Is it small apple? Is it like small egg? I would like to see one day a grape?”
