Bordeaux 2012: Clinet and Montrose

Clinet, Montrose and Domaine de Chevalier topped this morning’s Bordeaux 2012 releases.

Clinet is one of the few big name Pomerol estates to have released so far (the other being l’Evangile near the beginning of the campaign).

It dropped 12% on its €50 2011 price to €44 p/b (still 33% above its 2008 price of €33), however with critic Robert Parker giving his seal of approval to the Right Bank and Pomerol in particular, the wines from the region are expected to do well.

Neighbouring estate Clos l’Eglise also released this morning with a very tempting price drop of 43% on 2011 from €59.8 to €33.9 p/b, a drop which is also 23% down on the 2008 release price of €43.9.

On the Left Bank, Saint-Estèphe property Montrose clearly sought to emulate Pichon Comtesse’s successful release and dropped 20% from €72 per bottle ex-négociant to €57.60 p/b.

However, Liv-ex was quick to point out that the usual back vintages (04, 06, 07 and 08) are cheaper than the 2012.

Pessac Léognan estate Domaine de Chevalier did not drop at all and remained at €30, as did the Sauternes château Guiraud – also a non-mover at €30 p/b.

Margaux third growth Malescot St Exupéry was also out at €30 p/b but that represented an 11% drop on 2011’s €33.6.
