Hugh Johnson to auction off cellar
Celebrated wine writer, Hugh Johnson, is putting part of his extensive cellar up for auction.
As well as Bordeaux first growths that date back over 80 years (including one bottle of Latour 1961 and a 1937), Johnson’s cellar holds many rare bottles of German wine from the likes of Egon Müller and Robert Weil.
Johnson, a regular contributor to Decanter, explained that the sale would include the “majority” but not all of his cellar and was taking place because he was downsizing, moving house from Essex to be closer to his children and grandchildren in London.
He added that it was time to be “sensible” about what could realistically be drunk in the next few years.
It is thought the collection will amount to some 318 lots and while many will be single bottles rather than cases, with the first growths, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and 19th century Madeira (three bottles of 1830 included) on the list, it could make tens of thousands of pounds when it is sold.
