Chateau Musar
We are inoculated to resist.’ ~ Serge Hochar

The shade of the pergola,
the safest of vineyards, brings
no ripeness to this land.

To be rooted here
is to squat low
yet remain upstanding,

to know that each
juice-taut grape, each
cluster bunch held

is as permeable as skin
yet more symbolic,
that resilience has

no temperature,
survival no sun
except the oldest one.

Without knowing the background, we can feel the “fragility and survival” in the poem.
