Vinopolis opens Italian restaurant and bar

Vinopolis has extended its food and wine offering with an Italian restaurant, bar and bakery next to its Borough market site in south London.

One of the dishes on offer: tagliolini with crab meat

The 3,000 square feet space between Park Street and Brew Wharf encompasses Del Mercato restaurant, trattoria Bakery Panificio and Del Mercato bar.

A former tool hire yard, the vaulted site under the arches in Borough market has been revamped by architects Greig & Stephenson and features exposed brickwork and red and green leather banquettes.

Owned by the directors of Vinopolis, the trio aim to showcase a broad selection of regional Italian food and wine.

At the helm is head chef Stefano Motta, previously of Briciole in Marylebone, Latium in Fitzrovia and Restaurant SD26 in New York.

The 70-cover restaurant combines traditional and contemporary Italian cuisine, offering dishes such as tagliolini with crab meat, sweet chili and lime, with antipasti starting at £7.50, pasta at £7, mains at £14 and desserts at £4.50.

The wine list is formed of 50 bins, with a strong leaning towards Italian offerings starting at £16.95 a bottle, with 15 available by the glass from £4.35.

Bakery Panificio meanwhile, boasts freshly baked focaccia, pasta, biscuits, olive oil and pizza by the slice.

Del Mercato Bar on Park Street specialises in Italian aperitifs, such as the Aperol Spritzer, Negroni, Rossini and Bellini, as well as Prosecco and still wine.

The opening is part of a multimillion-pound redevelopment at Vinopolis.
