Top 10 US craft breweries

The US is a beer-loving nation and craft beers are a huge and growing market.

In 2011 sales figures show that beer sales in the US surpassed the sales of wine and spirits combined. The craft beer market in the US has grown over the last 15 years, from 1% of the overall beer to almost 6% in 2011.

According to the Brewers’ Association craft brewers sold an estimated 11,468,152 barrels in 2011 with a retail value of around US$8.7billion.

Paul Gatza, director of the Brewers Association said: “We attribute a large part of that growth to the many talented brewers who are providing beer lovers with more beer style and flavour choices than ever before.”

The association also reported record exports of US craft beer in 2011; over 110,000 barrels were exported, worth an estimated US£23.4m. This is an increase of 86% by volume and 97% by dollars on 2010 exports.

At present of the 2,000 breweries in the US 97% are small and independent and here is a look at the top 10 by sales in 2011.
