Pubs and bars among some of UK’s least accessible places, survey finds

Pubs, bars and restaurants are among the least accessible public places in the UK for people with mobility needs, according to new research.

A survey of 2,000 adults ranked pubs and bars as some of the least accessible public spaces, with 39% of respondents identifying them as difficult to access. Restaurants and cafés closely followed at 35%.

The research, commissioned by mobility specialist Muick Sandy, also found that many people with mobility issues feel excluded from everyday activities.

More than four in five (82%) respondents said mobility problems had affected their independence, while half said accessibility issues in their local area prevented them from socialising.

The findings suggest that feelings of isolation are widespread among people with mobility impairments. Based on an estimated 7.6 million people living with mobility issues in the UK, the survey indicates that almost four in five feel isolated because of their condition.

Nearly two-thirds (63%) of those surveyed said they believed the UK was failing to support people with mobility needs.

Mobility aid stigma

The research also highlighted concerns about the stigma associated with mobility aids. Three in five respondents (59%) said embarrassment or fear of being judged had stopped them from using one, despite 83% agreeing that a mobility scooter would improve their quality of life.

Ben Kenny, director of Muick Sandy, said the findings showed that attitudes towards mobility aids could have a significant impact on people’s lives.

“Millions of people would benefit from a mobility scooter, which would help them regain their independence, but embarrassment is keeping them isolated,” he said.

“A mobility aid isn’t just about getting from place to place; it’s about regaining confidence and getting back to everyday life.”
