Irish Distillers plans multi-million euro expansion
Irish Distillers has announced a €100 million expansion of its Midleton Single Distillery.
The distillery in County Cork produces the company’s Jameson and Single Pot Still Whiskeys of Midleton and the expansion is due to increased demand for Irish whiskey according to Pernod Ricard.
Jameson in particular has grown, selling a “milestone” three million cases in 2010, one million of them in the US.
Anna Malmhake, chairman and CEO of Irish Distillers said: “We are very pleased to announce the investment in our distillery at Midleton. This expansion project is a reflection of the international success of Jameson and the great future potential for the brand.
“Jameson is now in its 23rd consecutive year of growth and is experiencing double-digit growth in 40 markets. With this investment, we are confirming Midleton, where the tradition of distilling dates back to 1825, as the global centre of Irish whiskey production.”
The project will begin next year and last 15 months creating 60 manufacturing and technical jobs and bringing Irish Distiller’s number of employees in the Republic of Ireland to 560.
A further 250 construction jobs will also be created as a result of the work and the wider community will reportedly benefit as the distillery will be increasing its barley orders from the 33,000 tonnes it currently sources.
Earlier this year the company also announced a €100m investment in a new maturation facility in Dungourney near Midleton.
