Pol Roger Portfolio turns 21 in style

Pol Roger Portfolio celebrated its 21st birthday in London last night at Vintners Hall.

Guests included Lady Soames, Sir Winston Churchill’s daughter, as well as well known wine trade figures such as Hugh Johnson, Michael Broadbent, Jancis Robinson MW and Oz Clark.

The evening marked 21 years since the Champagne house set up its own UK subsidiary, a business which now represents a range of wines and spirits, and has ensured Britain is the largest export market for Pol Roger.

The wines served during dinner were selected from a range of agencies represented by Pol Roger Portfolio, including several from the 1990 vintage to highlight the year of the company’s foundation.

Among these were a Pinot Auxerrois from Domaine Josmeyer, a Cabernet Sauvignon from Cousino Macul and Beaune Clos des Mouches from Domaine Joseph Drouhin, the latter served from Jeroboam.

Attendees also enjoyed Tokaji Aszu 1999 from Crown Estates and Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill from the same year, before finishing with Glenfarclas Single Highland Malt Family Cask 1990 and Hine Cognac, also from that vintage.

Patrice Noyelle, chief excecutive of Pol Roger, toasted Christian de Billy, Maurice Pol-Roger’s grandson, who sadly could not attend the dinner, and stressed the importance of the UK trade and press to the Champagne’s success.
