Record haul for UK and Ireland in 2011 Michelin guide

Three-star restaurants The Waterside Inn, The Fat Duck, Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester and Restaurant Gordon Ramsay all held on to their ratings in the latest Michelin guide announced today.

Hélène Darroze at The Connaught was awarded its second star as restaurants in the UK and Ireland were awarded a record tally of 143 stars this year, incuding 53 in London. Also receiving a second star was Nathan Outlaw in Rock, Cornwall.

There are now eight two-star restaurants in London: L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon, Le Gavroche, Hélène Darroze, Hibiscus, the Ledbury, Marcus Wareing, Pied à Terre and The Square.

New additions to the 2011 list in London include Pétrus in Belgravia, Galvin La Chapelle in Spitalfields and Kitchen W8 in Kensington.

Gauthier Soho, Petersham Nurseries Cafe, Seven Park Place and Viajante were the other new one-star establishments in London on this year’s list.

Also included among the list of new one stars is the Pony & Trap in Chew Magna, near Bristol, highlighting the fact that some of the best cooking can be found in UK pubs.

Outside London, the new one-star restaurants are: Adam Simmonds at Danesfield House, Marlow; Black Rat, Winchester; Curlew, Bodiam; Paris House, Woburn.

Nahm at the Halkin Hotel loses its star, as does Roussillon after its chef Alexis Gauthier opened Gauthier Soho.

Commenting on the 2011 guide, editor in chief Rebecca Burr said: “This centenary edition underlines the UK’s greatest strength, which is the rich diversity and variety of its restaurants. The country embraces all kinds of restaurants and every type of cuisine and the public’s appetite shows no signs of abating.

"There is no doubt that 2010 was a difficult year but those hotels and restaurants that represented value for money, at whatever price, were the ones who were best placed to weather the storm.

"We found 12 new one star establishments and awarded 26 new Bib Gourmands which readers particularly appreciate for their moderate prices.”
