Suffolk suds hit UK pubs

An English lager has been unleashed into the UK on-trade.

Suffolk Blonde, at 5.2% abv, is the first beer brewed by the Chevallier Beer Company (CBC), a new firm set-up by the folks behind Aspall cider and aimed at bringing boutique beers to market.

The new single-hop varietal lager, brewed on behalf of CBC by Shepherd Neame in Kent using Marris Otter malt and dry-hopped Amarillo, has been created in conjunction with Belgian brewing expert Roger Mussche, a man who helped create Liefmans beers and Delirium Tremens.

Initially, Suffolk Blonde will be distributed in the Mitchell & Butlers pub estate and will be priced alongside the likes of Peroni and other premium lagers.

“When Aspall cider was originally launched, it brought something completely fresh to a cider market that was staid and homogenous,” Mussche said.

“Parallels can be drawn with the lager market and the aim is the same with Suffolk Blonde. We want to attract consumers for whom lager is not part of their drinking repertoire. I’m a cider drinker and I drink ales – I don’t normally drink lager but I absolutely love drinking this.”

As well as Suffolk Blonde, CBC will also be calling upon Aspall’s distribution network to market the Australian range of Little Creatures ales. Plans are afoot to add “two or three” other boutique beers to the portfolio.
