London set for biggest-ever Fairtrade tasting

The biggest-ever Fairtrade Wine Tasting, organised by the Fairtrade Wine Committee, will take place on Thursday 21 October at the offices of the Fairtrade Foundation in London.

The event promises to be the biggest Fairtrade wine tasting to date with over 100 wines for attendees to taste.

During the last five years the category has gone from a single niche product to one supported by most key multiple retailers such as the co-operative, Waitrose, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco, as well as increasingly breaking into the on-trade market.

Demand among UK consumers for Fairtrade wine shows no sign of abating, with the total volume sold growing to over 6.7 million litres last year.

The event follows a summer of consumer-focused promotional activity around the theme of Fairplay for Africa.

The tasting will be open from 11am to 5pm for trade and press to sample the growing range of Fairtrade wines and learn more about the opportunities presented by this unique combination of quality product and meaningful ethics.

New Fairtrade wine grape prices have also been introduced this year, opening the market to even more wine producers. These regions include all of South America, Lebanon and Georgia.

Kate Lewis, business development manager for wine at the Fairtrade Foundation, said: “Fairtrade wine is a great opportunity to offer something different to your customers, while giving growers a chance to transform their communities.

“Consumers are continuing to include ethical considerations in their purchase decisions, and in the last five years Fairtrade wine has gone from strength to strength in offering an excellent product with an engaging human story behind it.’

Jon Woodriffe, sales director at Origin Wine UK, added: “We’re delighted to be taking part in the fifth annual tasting, an event which goes from strength to strength every year.

“We’re thrilled this year to be welcoming even more licensees such as Bibendum, International Brands, Laithwaites and Thierry’s. We’re also really grateful to Harriet Lamb and her team at the Fairtrade Foundation for hosting the event which will help to reinforce all the hard work we are doing in the category. These are really exciting times for Fairtrade wine.”
