WoodWinters scoops retailer award

Niche Scottish retailer WoodWinters has been named the IWSC Independent Retailer of the Year 2010.

Now in its second year, the award was established to recognise the important role played by this sector in encouraging sales and understanding of quality wines and spirits.

WoodWinters, the Bridge of Allan firm formed by husband and wife team Cara Winters and Douglas Wood, saw off competition from other finalists after consumers across the UK were invited to vote for their favourite wine merchant.

The shortlist was as follows:

Cambridge Wine Merchants, Cambridge
Joseph Barnes Wines, Saffron Walden
Duncan Murray Wines, Market Harborough
Oxford Wine Company, Oxford
Peter Osborne Fine Wines, Oxford
Mostly Wine, Kirkaldy
WoodWinters, Bridge of Allan
Heritage Wine, Gloucestershire
Martinez Wines, Ilkley
Winetime, Carnforth

Speaking of the award, Frances Horder, competition director of the IWSC, said: “While we are best known for awarding medals to the very best wines and spirits from around the world, we are always aware of the additional services and expertise the independent wine merchant provides to knowledgeable UK wine buyers, with their unique ability to hand sell interesting wines and spirits.”

Meanwhile, Douglas Wood, company owner, said: “This us a huge recognition for making a positive difference in the way people think about and purchase wine.

“It’s a minefield out there, both for consumers and retailers alike, and this shows that we are making inroads with our value driven wines that speak for themselves alongside the established names.

"It’s fantastic to gain recognition for the innovation that we have brought to the trade, although we know that this is an endless process as others catch up and innovate too.

"But, plain and simply, we love wine, we love the wine that we have that we sell to our customers, and look forward to finding more of them and sharing them with our consumers over the coming year.”

The award was announced at Mosimann’s in London on Wednesday, 17 March.
