Cellar auction funds children’s charity

A wine collection from the cellar of Albert Frère, co-owner of Château Cheval Blanc and Belgian’s richest man, was auctioned yesterday by Sotheby’s, raising £1,149,310.50.

Frère is donating all proceeds to the Belgian charity, the Charles-Albert Frère Foundation, which he founded in 2000 to commemorate the death of his 19 year-old son in a car accident in April 1999.
The sale comfortably beat its estimate of just under £800,000 from 454 lots of mainly First Growth Bordeaux and Champagne. Highlights included a mixed lot with two magnums each of Château Haut Brion 2000, Château Margaux 2000, Château Latour 2000 and Château Pétrus 2000.
Among the Champagnes sold was Salon Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs 1982.
Commenting on the sale Frère said “I am very pleased to offer some of the greatest wines from my cellar to benefit a cause that is so dear to my heart.”
The Charles-Albert Frère Foundation was set up with the aim of helping children in difficulty as well as under-privileged adults. It is supported by the King Baudouin Foundation and comprises four non-profit organisations.
