Fuller’s acquires 100% stake in UK craft brewery Dark Star

British beer and pub giant Fuller’s has acquired a 100% stake in Sussex-based brewery Dark Star with a view to developing the brand in the UK and overseas.

Dark Star, which is based in Partridge Green, Sussex, will remain a standalone business.

The deal will give Dark Star access to greater funding, which will be used to “invest in new markets” and increase sales”, according to market research firm MCA.

Fullers believes that there is potential to develop the microbrewer’s beer brands both across the UK and internationally, reports the Morning Advertiser.

The craft brewer’s four pubs — The Lockheart Tavern (Haver’s Heath), The Anchor Tap (Horsham), The Partridge (partridge Green) and The Evening Star (Brighton), will be run by existing directors under a separate organisation, according to the announcement.

Dark Star’s managing director James Cuthbertson will continue to lead the brewer’s operations.

“The deal means we will continue to do what we do,” said Cuthbertson, “but gives us huge opportunities to brew more one-off small batch beers hand-in-hand with exploring the export market and expanded bottle and can formats.”

“We’ve always described Dark Star as more of a hobby that got out of control,” he added. “an ethos that will remain at the centre of what we do and what we’re about.”
