Experts to host wine and whisky fraud seminars in Singapore

A series of seminars aimed at tackling fraud in the fine wine and whisky markets will take place in Singapore from 14 to 16 March.

The programme, organised by Chai Consulting, will bring together leading authentication specialists to discuss the growing challenges of verifying rare bottles and protecting collectors and traders from counterfeits.

The talks will be led by internationally recognised wine authentication expert Maureen Downey, alongside Siobhan Turner MW and spirits specialist Isabel Graham-Yooll.

Rising concerns over fraud

The seminars will examine how fraud has become a major issue in global markets for rare wine and premium spirits, particularly whisky.

The programme is aimed at fine wine and spirits professionals, as well as collectors who want to ensure their investments are genuine, and sessions will cover topics including theft, black market trading, adulteration, investment scams and the methods used by counterfeiters.

Training in authentication techniques

The first day of the wine programme will open with a presentation on the global landscape of wine fraud, followed by an introduction to authentication methods. Participants will then take part in workshops examining inspection techniques and the condition of bottles, with attendees encouraged to bring their own bottles for analysis.

A full day of advanced authentication training will follow on 15 March, allowing participants to practise identifying signs of tampering and counterfeit production.

Focus on whisky and spirits

The final day of the event will focus on fraud in the spirits market, particularly whisky.

The session will explore authentication methods specific to spirits, alongside case studies and practical exercises designed to help identify warning signs.

Organisers say the skills taught during the seminar are based on more than 25 years of experience in authentication work and have helped save clients millions of dollars while preventing reputational damage for sellers.

Prices vary depending on the level of participation, ranging from US$800 for the introductory presentation to US$7,800 for the full three-day seminar covering both wine and spirits authentication.

Participants can register or request further information via the organisers at [email protected].
