WSET School London searches for single men for speed dating event

Attendees will meet at least 10 singles, and each new pair will enjoy a different wine activity, from blind tastings to wine quizzes and label drawing challenges. All tickets for women have already been snapped up.

WSET dating event

The Wine and Spirit Education Trust’s (WSET) flagship school is turning its hand to matchmaking with its first speed dating event, giving wine-lovers a break from ‘dating app fatigue’.

The event will take place on Tuesday 2 September at the WSET School in Bermondsey, south London, and will kick off at 6.30pm.

Tickets cost £35, and attendees can expect drinks, cheese and quizzes. The event is directed at men or women looking to meet those over the opposite gender, but if there is enough demand, WSET School London plans to host a LGBTQ+ version of the event in the future.

While female tickets are already sold out, the education centre is still looking for men over 30 years old. Non-binary attendees are encouraged to book according to the gender(s) they wish to meet.

The perfect pairing

After enjoying a welcoming drink on arrival, attendees will have the chance to meet at least 10 singles one-to-one. Each new couple will enjoy a different wine activity to spark conversation, from blind tastings to wine quizzes and label drawing challenges.

Partner Content

A wine and cheese-based group competition will also take place in the foyer to give attendees the chance to meet more people and enjoy snacks and wines curated by the events team.

Before the event, guests will be asked about their preferred age range, and WSET School London will match the attendees accordingly.

Everything happens for a riesling

Speed dating events can provide fruitful business opportunities for drinks businesses. Every week, UK bars like The Little Orange Door and Bubba Oasis in London, team up with dating app Thursday to host events for singles. In 2018, one bar in Balham made headlines for hosting a series of Naked Attraction-inspired dating events (yes, people stood opposite each other and one-by-one shed dressing gowns), with Prosecco.

And while Heineken launched a dating app of sorts, ‘Bar Dating’ is less about sparking romance and more to do with matching you up with your dream drinking establishment.

But it looks like WSET is the first alcohol-educator to add ‘matchmaking’ as a string in its bow. Perhaps, we’ll see many more future lovebirds praising it, like db editor Patrick Schmitt, the “UK’s greatest gift to the world of wine”.
