From the French Riviera to luxury bar takeovers (via a cellar or two) here are the events that kept db busy this week.
Bombay Sapphire takes to the Thames
Will Poulter, Josh Denzel, Jodie Kidd and Arielle Free were in London to celebrate Bombay Sapphire’s global partnership with the UIM E1 World Championship, the world’s first and only all-electric raceboat championship. While guests sipped in the sun and watched racebirds on the river, Poulter turned his hand to cocktail-making under the tutelage of world-renowned bartender Salvatore Calabrese.
Maison Drouhin offers a glimpse of history
Frédéric Drouhin showed a group of UK wine merchants the ‘freedom door’ used by his grandfather Maurice to escape the Gestapo in 1944. The trade, including db editor-in-chief Patrick Schmitt MW, were on tour with Maison Drouhin’s UK agent Pol Roger Portfolio – which celebrates 35 years since its foundation in 1990.
Perrier-Jouët brings its vineyards to Monaco
Sarah Neish, db‘s editor, journeyed to Monaco, where Pernod Ricard-owned Champagne Perrier-Jouët is at the centre of the action this summer. The maison has created a new Jardin Belle Époque space outside the legendary Hermitage Hotel. In the garden, guests can visit The Enchanting Tree installation, a life-sized replica tree which holds Champagne flutes on its branches. A piece of ‘sound art’ by eco-accoustician David Monacchi plays all around the tree, transporting visitors to inside Perrier-Jouët’s vineyards, given that the audio is of the cicadas which live there.
London hosts international bar takeovers
On Monday, db Asia editor Eloise Fielden celebrated BCB with a cocktail tour of some of London’s hottest takeovers, including Simone Caporale taking over Oblix, The Shard with Amaro Santoni; Overstory, New York taking over Scarfes Bar, Rosewood London (pictured); and Himkok, Oslo at Dram, Soho.
House of Peroni welcomes racing royalty
db’s beer and features editor Jessica Mason met with the World’s number one bartender Simone Caporale to discuss his involvement with The House of Peroni’s three-day immersive experience. The event, hosted in Covent Garden, was also attended by Ferrari ‘s HP driver Lewis Hamilton.

Luxury hotel unveils new cocktails
Michael Huband, db‘s partner content editor, went to Dover Yard at 1 Hotel Mayfair for the launch of its new menu. Built around the four classical elements, the cocktails prioritise sustainability and include a milk punch flavoured with jasmine and banana; and a margarita flavoured with hot sauce, chicken powder and sour grape.
Pol Roger invites UK trade to its cellars
Patrick Schmitt MW continued his French excursion by heading north to Champagne. Fifth-generation member of the Pol Roger family Hubert de Billy took a gathering of UK merchants on a tour of the Champagne maison’s cellars this week.
Jack Daniel’s concocts luxury serve at The Connaught Bar
To mark the launch of Jack Daniel’s new limited-edition 10-Year-Old Tennessee Whiskey, The Connaught Bar and Jack Daniel’s have launched a special limited-edition 10-Year-Old cocktail called the Silver Seventeen. The cocktail, which combines Jack Daniels 10-Year-Old, mixed with Three Cents Cherry Soda, Silver Needle Tea, Ginger Wine and Mint Leaf, has been created by head bartender Agostino Perrone. Eloise Fielden headed to the famed Mayfair hotel to try the new serve, priced at £40 and inspired by an original creation from the Connaught Bar celebrating the history of the Cobbler.
Whispering Angel flies high
Would it be summer without rosé on a rooftop? Michael Huband headed to STK Stratford, overlooking London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, where the Whispering Angel Terrace hosted a party fuelled by Provence rosé and Whispering Angel cocktails.
A word of thanks from Budweiser
Budweiser Brewing Group president Brian Perkins led an address to MPs, maltsters and farmers on Tuesday, thanking them for the valuable role they play in upholding the quality within the supply chain of beer in the UK which assists in supporting the economy.
