Washington State University offers new brewing course

Washington State University Tri-Cities has introduced a new year-long brewing qualification to help people break into the sector.

.

The course, named the Brewing Certificate Program, targets multiple audiences, including homebrewers, beer lovers considering career changes, and individuals hoping to join the industry.

Washington State University Tri-Cities is one of six campuses that make up Washington State University and is located along the Columbia River in northern Richland, Washington.

The majority of the coursework is set to take place online, but students will participate in two intensive hands-on brewing camps that will be held in Yakima and Spokane.

Each of these practical sessions have been compiled to provide direct experience with commercial brewing equipment as well as school students with techniques under the guidance of industry professionals.

Speaking about the fact that the certificate was available to take at WSU, Jean Dodson Peterson from WSU Tri-Cities said: “Tri-Cities is a really dynamic community that craft brew as well as all the wineries we have in this area…it’s kind of a perfect combination of food and beverage in this space,”

Peterson explained: “Students will learn both the scientific principles and practical craft of brewing, covering topics from ingredient selection and fermentation science to quality control and production management. The curriculum emphasises real-world applications that prepare graduates for immediate entry into brewing careers. Students will work with actual brewing equipment and processes, gaining experience that translates directly to professional brewing environments.”

According to the university, the course’s online format will also help to attract students who are currently living across Washington state and beyond.

Peterson added: “This accessibility removes geographic barriers that might prevent interested individuals from pursuing brewing education.”

Career opportunities for those who graduate from the course include positions at craft breweries, brewpubs, production facilities, and related businesses throughout the drinks industry. A reinvestment into the longevity of the brewing industry and the skillset among brewers has become more present over recent years, even while the sector struggles, the decision to support its endeavours and upskill new brewers, especially in better training to create no- and low-alcohol beers has been noted.

To look into the Washington State’s new curriculum further, prospective brewing students can find enrolment information and further details about the new certificate through WSU Tri-Cities.
