Quincy Jones collection and other rare bottles achieves US$1.4m at auction

The fine wine cellar of legendary music producer Quincy Jones and another collection of rare bottles has made US$1,402,812 at auction, according to Christie’s.

The collection saw a sale of the Michael Jackson and Thriller producer Jones’ wines, as well as a diplomat’s collection of rare bottles achieve 129% sold against the low estimate and 10 world records achieved across the sale.

There were 23% from new bidders and buyers and a third of all buyers being millennials, the auction house said.

Top lot of the Jones collection was eight bottles of Château Mouton Rothschild 2000, which achieved US$12,500. In addition, seven bottles of Château Lafite Rothschild 1990 sold for US$6,875, a bottle of Château Latour 1959 sold for US$3,500, six bottles of Ridge Vineyards, Monte Bello, Cabernet Sauvignon 1991 achieved US$3,500.

A bottle of Leacock, Malvazia 1933 sold for US$750 against its low estimate of US$100, setting a new world auction record.

The top lot of the entire sale was Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, La Tâche 1990, 6 bottles per lot, from a diplomat’s collection of rarities, which sold for US$50,000.

Additional results were achieved for a single bottle of Terrantez 1795 which sold for US$11,875, more than twice its low estimate and three bottles of Massandra White Muscat 1940 which sold for US$1,625, also a new world auction record.

Chris Munro, head of department, Americas fine wine and spirits, commented: “We are delighted to close out the year in Los Angeles with tremendous results for our featured wine collections.

“Wines from the Cellar of Quincy Jones were snapped up by a multitude of domestic and international buyers, testament to his connoisseurship and well considered buying in assembling this notable collection.

“Elsewhere we witnessed strong results for rare vintages of Burgundy from the 1990’s including La Tâche from the Domaine.”
