Princess of Wales plays ‘competitive’ beer pong

It has been revealed the Princess of Wales is a fan and ‘competitive’ player of the popular drinking game, beer pong.

Speaking on podcast The Good, The Bad and the Rugby, presenter Mike Tindall – who is related to Katherine through his marriage to the Princess Royal’s daughter, Zara –  announced that although he wasn’t going to say she was “uber-competitive”, he had seen her play beer pong.

She responded by denying her competitiveness and said she was “just very active”, and enjoyed walking, climbing, and cold water swimming.

The game of beer pong, which has its origins in American university culture, has recently become more global having been popularised in films and pop culture in the past several decades.

It involves players throwing a ping pong or table tennis ball across a long table with a collection of cups of beer assembled at the other end, in a similar triangular formation to a row of skittles or snooker balls. There are two teams at each end of the table, with both ends having cups, to make the game competitive.

If the thrower manages to get a ball in the cup, the beer must be consumed by the opposition player, and the cup removed until the game is complete.

The news comes as Tindall enters the drinks world with his Blackeye Gin brand alongside his podcast co-hosts, Alex Payne and James Haskell.

A support fund from the gin, which was created by gin distillery Hawkridge, will invest £1.50 from each bottle sold to support three key pillars: Research, Risk, and Recovery, for rugby players past and present. The goal of the fund is to tackle industry issues and become one of the largest donors to rugby-related causes within five years.
