Kendall Jenner gains B Corp Certification for 818 Tequila brand
Supermodel and Keeping Up With the Kardashians star Kendall Jenner has gained B Corp status for her 818 Tequila brand for its social and environmental performance.
B Corp certification is granted by non-profit B Lab following a thorough assessment of a brand’s social and environmental impact. B Impact Assessment criteria measures an organisation’s social impact across categories including corporate governance, the environment, community, employees and customers, all of which the brand either met or exceeded.
Only 40% of companies who submit their B Impact Assessments actually go on to earn certification, which 818 achieved with the support of Impact Growth Partners, a women-owned and operated B Corp consulting firm.
Kendall Jenner commented on the news, saying she was proud of the achievement after just two years in operation. “This is just the first step, we will continue to work hard to make 818 as sustainable as possible,” she pledged.
The company has also just launched a new ‘Buy a Bottle, Give a Brick’ campaign. For every bottle of 818 Tequila purchased from 1 April to 30 June 2023, 818 Tequila has agreed to donate one brick through its Bricks Programme, up to US$25,000, which “directly impacts local Mexican infrastructure projects”, the company said in a press release.
The Bricks Programme uses post-production agave byproducts to create adobe bricks used for building local community infrastructure like libraries, classrooms, and weather-mitigation structures. Jenner’s 818 Tequila brand has partnered with S.A.C.R.E.D. (Saving Agave for Culture, Recreation, Education, and Development) — a nonprofit that supports Mexican communities where heritage agave spirits are made — to undertake the project.
Kendall Jenner is not the first Tequila brand owner to gain B Corp certification. Former Bacardi CEO Mike Dolan achieved B Corp certification for his Tequila brand Mijenta last year, the first of its kind to gain the eco-friendly accreditation. Read more on that here.
