The renaissance of Sangiovese goes via London

The second edition of ‘Sangiovese Reset’ – an exciting full-day deep dive into Italy’s most planted grape variety from every denomination growing Sangiovese, including Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Romagna’s shooting star Modigliana and historic Predappo, as well as Montecucco, Val d’Orcia, Umbria and Marche – returns to London on 7 March.

Walter Speller, Editor Italy at www.JancisRobinson.com and Jane Hunt MW have teamed up again for the second edition of the event. Speller commented:

“Both Jane and I are passionate about Sangiovese. In spite of or perhaps because it is Italy’s most numerous variety it is often understood as ‘simple.’ Nothing could be further from the truth and, in actual fact, Sangiovese is a real Prima Donna and as fickle as Pinor Noir. If it is not given a prime spot in vineyards and not handled with care in the cellar it simply cannot show its greatness.”

With this spirit in mind, and in an effort to rehabilitate Sangiovese’s reputation, Sangiovese Reset was born.

“From the first edition on, in March 2020 we decided we would only invite the very best producers and exclude any international varieties which could obscure the fact that Sangiovese is a finely-tuned transmitter of terroir. This has been of Sangiovese RESET’s key message from the onset,” Speller added.

With over 100 producers (from 87 in 2020), trade visitors will experience a width and depth of Sangiovese wines never shown before in the UK, from the very top of Montalcino to new talent from Romagna, which we are convinced is set to become a benchmark style next to Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino.

Top estates presenting themselves at Sangiovese RESET include Montesecondo, Poggio Scalette, Querciabella, Fontodi, Tenuta di Carleone, Badia a Coltibuono, Felsina and Castello di Fonterutoli from Chianti Classico and there is an embarrassment of riches from Montalcino represented by some of its top estates such as Fuligni, Canalicchio di Sopra, Sesti, Le Chiuse, Baricci, the newly revitalised Argiano, Cupano, Poggio di Sotto, Le Ripi with its high density vineyards and the last of traditionalists to survive, Tiezzi and many, many more.

Attendees can get up-to-date information on the most important developments concerning Sangiovese in a range of seminars run by experts. Alessandro Masnaghetti, the guru of Italian wine maps, who just published a detailed atlas on Chianti Classico, will explain the brand new Chianti Classico Village appellations with Fontodi’s Giovanni Manetti, while Giorgio Melandri and Walter Speller will present a historical vertical of Romagna Sangioveses going back three decades.
