Jeremy Clarkson slams Phillip Schofield’s wine

The former Top Gear host has taken a shot at fellow veteran broadcaster Phillip Schofield, remarking that the This Morning presenter’s box wine range is “undrinkable”.

Clarkson is never one to shy away from saying how he feels. Whether he’s suggesting that consumers ought to pay more for food or that the best thing to drink in a heatwave is beer, his opinions have generated many db headlines in recent months.

It is unsurprising then that, given the considerable success his Hawkstone beer and cider range is enjoying, he might take the opportunity to make a joke at the expense of another celebrity-backed booze brand that has not fared so well. After all, generating controversy has been a hallmark of his Hawkstone marketing.

Clarkson was reported in The Sun on Sunday as saying the following: “Most people want my beer to be a celebrity gimmick. They want it to be Phillip Schofield’s wine box, which has been withdrawn from sale now for being undrinkable. They want it to be that, they want it to be ‘I’ve just put my name on it’. But the truth of the matter is I am growing the spring barley and I am very involved in the ownership of the brewery.”

Indeed, Schofield’s wine range, which was slammed back when it was launched in 2020 for being “bitter” and “only fit for the bin”, was dropped from Waitrose this October. A statement from the supermarket at the time said: “It’s absolutely normal for us to review our selection from time to time and we haven’t sold this wine for a while.”

Schofield now has his own range of olives, olive oil and Balsamic vinegar retailing at Boots. He is yet to respond to Clarkson’s comments.
