Kentucky Bourbon Benefit to provide flood relief

A group of distillers, whiskey-sellers and enthusiasts have teamed up to launch an auction to provide support for those in Eastern Kentucky affected by the floods, which are believed to have claimed 37 lives so far with hundreds unaccounted for.

The flooding, which began after heavy rainfall in late July, has caused untold damage to home, business and public infrastructure. Many of the displaced having been given refuge in state parks, though rising temperatures and a lack of clean water are growing concerns. President Joe Biden is due to visit this week.

In response to the disaster, the Kentucky Distillers’ Association, Westport Whiskey & Wine, Bourbon Crusaders (a group which strives to find charitable opportunities from Bourbon) and whiskey writer Fred Minnick have come together. The group are donating private barrel experiences, vintage spirits, rare bottles and unique tasting/tourism opportunities, to raise funds at auction.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said in a statement: “Kentucky’s Bourbon industry was there for our Western Kentucky families following the tornadoes, making the single largest donation to that relief fund – and now I am proud to see this industry stepping up once again to support our Eastern Kentucky families affected by the devastating flooding…I know this will make a tremendous impact for our people and I am grateful for the continued support.”

Bidding opens at 12pm EST on Thursday, 11 August, and closes at 11pm EST on Sunday, 21 August. All proceeds from the 10 day online silent auction will go to Team Eastern Kentucky Flood Relief Fund. At this moment, the fundraising target is $10,000.
