The week in pictures

This week in the world of drinks: Joséphine Baker inducted into the Panthéon in Paris, Mermaid Gin founder announces plans to row across the Atlantic, and Tim Atkin MW and Jane Anson present an exclusive tasting of Rioja and Bordeaux to showcase their shared heritage.

Joséphine Baker was inducted into the Panthéon in Paris on 30 November, becoming the sixth woman and the first black woman to receive France’s highest honour.

In her memory, the Hugel Family has shared this photo of a lunch with her. A lover of Hugel wines, she also wrote a note of remembrance on December 30, 1931, in the Guest Book of the house founded in 1639.

Mermaid Gin Co-founder Xavier Baker has just announced he will be taking part in the 2023 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.

Mr Baker and his two teammates plan to row across the Atlantic unaided to raise awareness of ocean habitats and raise money for marine focused charities.

On Friday 19 November, Tim Atkin MW and Jane Anson presented an exclusive tasting at HIDE in London to showcase the shared heritage between Rioja and Bordeaux, exploring their use of varietals and blends as well as discussing winemaking and ageing practices, tracing the joint history of these fine wine regions from 1780s through to today.
