Wine of the Week: a fine, affordable organic rosé

Our wine of the week is a double Gold medal-winning pale, dry, French rosé that’s organic, part barrel-fermented, sub £20, and from the Languedoc.

In an emerging trend among fine rosés of the world, this week’s recommendation features a pale, dry pink wine that’s been partly fermented in oak, bringing a touch of creaminess to the ripe berry fruit in this first-rate drop.

Hailing from the Languedoc’s leading luxury rosé producer, Gérard Bertrand, this wine, called Source of Joy, is yet another example of his skill with pink wines – his other rosés from this part of southern France include the outstanding Hampton Water (made in partnership with Jon Bon Jovi), along with the Master-winning Château La Sauvageonne La Villa, and the world’s priciest still pink wine: Clos du Temple.

Notably, Bertrand’s Source of Joy rosé from the 2020 vintage picked up a Gold medal in two of this year’s Global Wine Masters – achieving top scores in both the Rosé Masters and Organic Masters competitions.

Giving the wine great appeal is not only the ripe fruit flavours, from red berry to white-fleshed peach, but also the gently oily texture, fresh finish, with a touch of fine-grained tannin, along with hint of creamy vanilla from the oak-influence in the winemaking.

Such a combination of characters ensures this rosé is both full and refreshing, making for an extremely versatile wine, that would suit sipping on its own or pairing with a wide range of foods.

Furthermore, while most of the world’s barrel-influenced fine dry rosés are high-priced, Source of Joy can be bought for under £20.

Finally, it should be noted that this rosé is the rebranded version of Bertrand’s Joy’s rosé, which picked up a Gold medal in last year’s Global Rosé Masters.
