As reported by Wine Industry Advisor, the auction brought in €1,923,000, with total takings up 19% on 2020, despite coronavirus complications and a lower number of lots going under the hammer.

The well attended auction included a record-breaking lot for a barrel of Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint-Georges Cuvée Georges Faiveley, which went under the hammer for €32,000.

The charity lot – 228 liters of Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Saint-Georges went under the hammer for €49,380, setting a new record.

All proceeds from the sale will go towards the Institut Pasteur hospital. The auction was dominated by red wine sales, which accounted for €1,869,000 of the total takings via 17 different lots.

The single white lot of the sale, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru Les Terres Blanches, Cuvée Pierre de Pême, sold for €54,000.

The 2020 vintage attracted a lot of buyer interest – registrations for the auction were up 20% on last year.

Erik Orsenna, ambassador of the Institut Pasteur, said: “I am delighted and honoured to be the sponsor of the 60th Nuits St Georges Charity Wine Auction in aid of a flu research programme being developed at the Institut Pasteur.

“The generosity displayed by the bidders in the raising of an incredible €49,380 makes so much sense because the work of Louis Pasteur, wine doctor, chemist and visionary, has so much to do with wine production.

“In the name of all those at the institute, I would like to thank you for your support; it’s by working together that we will take research further.”

The Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges is a winemaking hospital founded in 1270, two centuries before its illustrious neighbour, the Hospices de Beaune, founded in 1443.

The Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges works in the same way as the Hospices de Beaune, combining a medical activity and a prestigious wine estate. The Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges auction always takes place on the second Sunday of March.
