12 employees from one of the spirits group’s logistics contractors and one other worker at a packaging plant in Shieldhall, Glasgow, tested positive over the past week.

Diageo, which makes Smirnoff vodka and Johnnie Walker Whisky, has now ordered a deep clean of the areas the infected employees worked in and are working to prevent any on-site transmission.

“The health and well-being of our people, suppliers and the community is our number one priority,” a spokesperson said.

“We have stringent protocols and procedures in place to ensure our workplaces are as safe as possible.

“All safety protocols and procedures have been followed, including a deep clean sanitation of the relevant area and detailed contact tracing. A number of other individuals have been asked to self-isolate as a precaution and additional control measures have been put in place to prevent on-site transmission. We continue to monitor the situation very carefully and we are in touch with the relevant authorities.”
