Millennials driving UK restaurant trade in August

Millennial consumers drove the majority of trade at UK restaurants, pubs and bars in August according to a new report by drinks distributor Bibendum Wine.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s successful Eat Out to Help Out scheme brought an extra 10 million diners through the doors of hospitality venues in the UK last month. A total of 32.5 million people have visited bars, pubs and restaurants in Britain since lockdown lifted, up from 22.5 million in July.

According to the report, diner numbers in the UK of those aged between 25-34 were up 70% in August on July, while the number of consumers aged 35-44 who ventured out to eat in August rose by 20%.

The more cautious age bracket of over 55s are starting to gain confidence with regards to venturing out, with 39% now happy to do so. Being bored of cooking at home is also driving diners back to restaurants, though the survey found 65% of consumers are still avoiding public transport.

Bibendum believes that the shift towards table service rather than ordering at the bar provides an opportunity for upselling on the drinks front.
