Christie’s HK announces inaugural Japanese sake sale

Christie’s Hong Kong will host its first live wine and spirit auction of the year on 12 July, with over 660 lots, including top-notch Bordeaux and Burgundy, Scotch and Japanese whiskies and its first premium Japanese sake sale.

The auction market in Hong Kong will be active again in July. Following the announcement of Sotheby’s sale in early July, Christie’s is also holding its first global live auction of the year to offer wine connoisseurs another opportunity to purchase their favourite bottles.

Leading the sale is an extensive range of Bordeaux first growths and their equivalents on the right bank, and the most sought after producers in Burgundy such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy and Domaine Armand Rousseau. Some of the large formats available in this sale are both DRC Romanée-Conti 1990 and La Tâche 1995 in Jeroboam, and Mouton 2000 in Imperial.

An expanded offering of Scottish and Japanese single-malt whiskies from world-renowned distilleries will also be featured, such as The Macallan Millennium Decanter 50 YO 1949 and Karuizawa 50 YO 1965 Cask No. 2372.

This sale has also specially introduced premium Japanese sakes from the revered Juyondai, including Juyondai Ryusen, Juyondai Hakuunkyorai and Juyondai Honmaru.

Michelle Chan, head of wine, Christie’s Asia Pacific, commented: “Variety is the theme for this sale with wines spanning over 185 years, from a bottle of Madeira 1830 to Bordeaux 2015 and the latest released sake. There is certainly something for everyone. The core of the sale will be a selection of the most coveted Burgundy and Bordeaux wines, which will be further complimented by an array of highly desirable Scottish and Japanese Single-Malt Whiskies.

“We are excited to introduce a new dimension to our sale this season by offering sake enthusiasts a curated selection of Juyondai. After witnessing strong demand from our recent wine and spirits online sale, we expect this momentum to extend to our live sale and look forward to welcoming global collectors in July.”
