Château Tanunda comes within top 20 wineries in Australia

Barossa Valley’s Château Tanunda has placed 17th in Huon Hooke’s annual review of the top wineries in Australia, achieving a top 20 spot for the third consecutive year.

Hooke’s Top Australian Wineries examines over 10,000 wines from 1,600 different wineries. Working from reviews from the previous 24 months, the highest rated wines are used to compile the ranking.

Tanunda is one of only two Barossa wineries (Henschke is the other) to have consistently ranked within the top 20.

The positive review coincides with the winery’s 130th anniversary, and two decades since the Geber family took over the estate.

In his review, Hooke wrote: “Best known for hearty reds that spotlight the Barossa’s rich heritage of old vines, capped by the Herculean 150 Year-Old Vines 1858 Field Blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Malbec.”

“The Everest Grenache and Shiraz (2016 vintages were tasted) are the pinnacle of those varieties. There are also Terroir Shirazes from Ebenezer, Greenock, Marananga and Eden Valley. A stunning line-up.”

Both the Everest Old Vine Grenache and The Everest Shiraz are barrel selected wines, made using grapes from the best parcels vines in the best years. As a result, according to the winery, they have earned a reputation as “cult wines” with new releases “snapped up quickly soon after release”.

The winery was recently named the best Australian producer at the Berlin Wine Trophy.
