What’s on this weekend

It’s week seven. The gin is gone. The vodka is gone. The good whisky is gone. Now even the rum is running out and you’re getting desperate. The bottle of Tequila sat collecting dust since your problematic Day of the Dead Halloween Party of 2014 has caught your eye but: how to do it?

Margaritas on course! Next week is Cinco de Mayo, and to get us ready, the team at north London’s Ladies and Gentlemen cocktail bar are hosting a cocktail making masterclass this afternoon (1 May).

William Borrell, the bar’s owner and founder of Vestel Vodka (and brother of Razorlight’s Johnny Borrell) will be take you through the stages of perfecting the classic margarita. The bar is hosting live workshops every week through its Kitchen Cupboard Cocktail Sessions. Whatever ingredient you’re missing, Borrell shows you how to improvise and whip something up with the stuff in your kitchen.

Missing the taste of a big ol’ pint of crisp, fruity pale ale in your local? The folks at north London brewery Beavertown are celebrating the launch of a new lower ABV “super session” IPA with a beer tasting this afternoon, hosted by founder Logan Plant.

Called Nanobot, it comes in at 2.8% ABV and contains 97 calories, making it a lighter option. The brewer said the addition of oats and wheat to the brew give a “fuller, richer mouthfeel, meaning you get a drinking experience like that of a regular 5% IPA”.

Plant said: “We always had a May launch in mind, but I feel it’s important now more than ever to provide people with more choice in their drinking experience. While we’re all living in isolation, Nanobot is an exciting new option for those looking to try low ABV beers; a style that’s steadily been growing in popularity already. We hope this launch will give people a bit of a boost and keep us all going until we can return to our beloved pubs”.

Why not use the evenings to share your newfound love of English wine with the world?

WineGB has launched a weekly #EnglishWineNight, on social media every Friday from 7-8pm.

Every week the event, brought you you by Wines of Great Britain, will focus on a different wine region of England and Wales. Tonight, it’s all about Hampshire.

Local vineyards taking part include Danebury, a family-owned boutique producer near Stockbridge, where the estate sits on a former racehorse training yard.

Each evening includes on line tastings, videos posted by winemakers, Q&A sessions and encouraging followers to post photos of their enjoying English wines.

On the evening itself, people can join in by following the hashtag #EnglishWineNight, as well @wineGB on Instagram or Facebook, or @Wine_GB on Twitter, and you may also be in a chance of winning a case of English wines.

When: Friday 1 May, 7pm

Find out when other regions will be ticked off the list here, so you can stock up in preparation.

If you’re honest with yourself, how many Buzzfeed personality quizzes have you completed since this started? You’re trying to find out which boy from Dawson’s Creek you are based on the salad you make. You’ve never seen Dawson’s Creek, and you hate salad, but that doesn’t matter now.

Why not find an alternative source to get your quiz fix?

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society has teamed up with wildlife expert Nick Baker to create an online interactive quiz that explores the connection between whisky and wildlife. You answer roughly a dozen questions to reveal you “spirit animal”, and what that means in terms of the whisky you might like.

With his knowledge of both wildlife and whisky in mind, he has come up with his pick of 12 animals to match each of the Society’s flavour profiles and explore the relationship between the spirit and the natural world.

For example, I came out as a Binturong (a bear cat creature native to southeast Asia), which are described as enigmatic, wise and deep, and “surprisingly dexterous and agile”.

If you, too, want an assessment of your hand-eye coordination, take the share it with your Scotch-loving friends on your Zoom drinks over a dram this weekend.
