Doña Paula’s Martín Kaiser named Viticulturist of the Year
In his Argentina Special Report 2020, Tim Atkin MW has named Martín Kaiser of Doña Paula ‘Viticulturist of the Year’, highlighting his continuous focus on terroir.
Tim Atkin’s Argentine Viticulturist of the Year – Martín Kaiser
In this year’s ‘Special Report’, which is now celebrating its eighth edition, Atkin gave this top award to Martín Kaiser, who joined Doña Paula as a viticulturalist in 2006.
Since that time, Kaiser has conducted a comprehensive vineyard research programme entitled ‘Terroir in Focus’, looking specifically at the influence of weather and soil on Malbec. Preparation for the research programme included digging more than 700 pits to identify the different soils of Doña Paula, completing around 200 microvinifications to reflect each soil in a single wine.
This recognition is particularly pertinent as from May 2020 Kaiser will be taking a new position: director of viticulture and winemaking at Doña Paula, reporting into the viniviticulture director of the Santa Rita Estates group. “I am very happy with this new professional challenge, which reinforces the work we have done for 14 years in Doña Paula and has been, without doubt, a great school for all who have been fortunate to be part of it,” he said.
Under his tutelage, emblematic vineyards of Doña Paula have been developed, including Alluvia in Gualtallary, enabling renowned wines such as Alluvia Parcel and the Altitude Series range to be developed. Kasier, assisted by Andrea Tansini, takes over the winemaking element of the role from Marcos Fernandez who left Doña Paula earlier this year.
For the latest edition of Atkin’s Argentina Special Report, over 1,700 wines from 331 wineries were tasted, on which Atkin commented, “The transformation has been remarkable, I can’t think of another country that has changed so much in my wine writing lifetime.”
He added, “Again and again this year, I tasted with a smile on my face as wine after great wine expressed its terroir with precision, grace and beauty.”
