What’s on this week

In “Improvise, Adapt, Overcome” Bacardi rum has partnered with Pussycat Doll Ashley Roberts, and fitness studio Frame, to host a livestream danceed class this Friday (24 April) inspired by tracks that embody the ‘Sound of Rum’.

The 30-minute, Caribbean-inspired class will be streamed live via both Ashley and Frame’s Instagram channels at 6pm. Roberts is also a dab hand with a shaker, and will livestream a rum cocktail masterclass on her Instagram account next Wednesday, teaching her followers how to rustle up a Bacardi Cuatro Highball cocktail with just three ingredients.

Meanwhile, Aldi has teamed up with TV mixologist and flavour guru Pritesh Mody to help those stuck at home recreate cocktails on a shorestring, to coincide with the launch of the grocer’s new botanical gin range, Haysmith’s

Mody, who is a regular on Channel’s 4 Sunday Brunch and BBC News, will host a live cocktail making masterclass on Aldi’s Facebook page at 5pm on 24 April to show shoppers how they can make decadent cocktails at home.

The cocktails are Aldi’s “own take” on famous drinks from around the world, including the Jardin D’aldi, designed to emulate Chateau Marmont’s Gardener’s Gimley, but only costing £1.30 per serve to make at home.

In Instagram Is Everything, mobile bar company The Cocktail Service has teamed up with Makers Mark to launch the ‘Drinkstagram Awards’, which open today.

Bartenders can enter using any combination of ingredients, but a “key emphasis will be placed on the aesthetics of the cocktail”, according to the group.

To enter, you need to whip up an original cocktail and post it on your Instagram page with the recipe and inspiration for creating the drink in the caption.

Bartenders must also tag Makers Mark and The Cocktail Service on communication around the competition along with the hashtag #drinkstagramawards2020.

To a certain extend, this is also thrown to a public vote.

The amount of accumulated likes will account for ten points, with the score weighting as follows:

Aesthetics 50/100
Recipe 20/100
Inspiration 20/100
Entry likes on bartenders account 10/100

Nick Ford, Director of The Cocktail Service, said: “We have seen a phenomenal response in our initial marketing of the competition and we have reached out to many leading influencers globally who will take part in our inaugural competition.

“We feel that cocktail culture on Instagram is a sleeping giant, it has a huge, huge following and is backed up by some incredibly talented mixologists and home bartenders who have never even worked in a bar.”

Stretching digital adaptation to its logical extreme Woodford Reserve has joined Churchill Downs for a nationwide, at-home celebration in the US that honours the tradition and pageantry of the Kentucky Derby while also raising up to US$2 million for people impacted by the global pandemic. It includes the “first ever virtual horse race”.

The day-long virtual experience will take place on Saturday, May 2, the original date for the annual race, and will act as a warm-up to NBC’s 3p.m. to 6p.m. re-airing of the 2015 Kentucky Derby.

To further lift spirits and encourage safe and healthy at-home Derby celebrations, Woodford Reserve will join in by calling in master distiller Chris Morris to demo how to make the perfect Mint Julep while speaking about the history that connects thoroughbreds, bourbon and Derby at 2pm ET.

Assistant Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall, an expectant mother, will also share her favourite mocktail recipes inspired by Derby cocktail classic.

Then at 3pm, Morris and McCall will join Derby fans from all over the world for a toast to celebrate the First Saturday in May and look forward to the 5 Sept Run for the Roses. The toast will be on Woodford Reserve’s YouTube Live channel.

Fans can visit www.KentuckyDerby.com to choose their favourite horse to win the virtual race, and can join Churchill Downs in making a charitable donation to COVID-19 emergency relief efforts.

Churchill Downs has pledged to match up to $1 million of donations, for a total potential donation of $2 million.
