Distill Ventures backed Ritual Zero Proof launches alcohol-free ‘Tequila’

Ritual Zero Proof, an alcohol-free “spirit” start-up backed by accelerator Distill Ventures, has launched a non-alcoholic alternative to Tequila.

The new product, which is designed with Margaritas in mind, is made with “a balanced blend of botanicals with a complex flavour profile that simulates the mouthfeel of traditional tequila,” according to the company.

Ritual Tequila Alternative is the “first of its kind”, said Marcus Sakey, founding partner of Ritual Zero Proof.

“Since our launch less than a year ago, we’ve received so many requests for a natural, zero proof offering that mimics the flavour experience of tequila. With the margarita in mind, we’re so proud we can deliver on that feedback, especially at a time when so many of us are mixing up our cocktail rituals.”

Ritual Gin, Whiskey and Tequila alternatives are available for purchase through Amazon as well as the brand’s website, for $25 per 70cl bottle.

Distill Ventures, an incubator for small drinks companies funded by Diageo, acquired a minority stake in Ritual Zero Proof in January this year.

Founded in Chicago by three best friends Marcus Sakey, GG Sakey and David Crooch in 2019, the company claims to be the first US-based alcohol-free brand that “echoes the taste and smell of spirits.” It is also the first alc-free brand to be publicly backed by the Diageo incubator.

“We’re now selling more bottles a day through Amazon and our own website, RitualZeroProof.com than ever before,” Sakey said. “Shifting our focus to direct to consumer has allowed us to continue to cater to our customers during a very difficult time.”
