Bacardi Legacy global finals postponed

The 12th annual Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition – one of the world’s most prestigious mixology contests – has postponed its global final in Miami due to Covid-19.

Eric van Beek from Netherlands won the Bacardi Legacy finals in 2018

The competition, which was due to take place in Miami from 1-7 May, will be postponed until further notice in line with the social distancing guidelines set out by the World Health Organisation.

“In coordination with our local authorities and public health officials, Bacardi has made this decision to safeguard the health and wellbeing of everyone involved in the Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition – from our finalists to our hotel and bar partners,” said Ned Duggan, global senior vice-president of Bacardi.

“This remains an ever-evolving and challenging situation, but we should all do our part to limit the spread of Covid-19,” Duggan added.

A total of 41 bartenders from around the world were due to compete in the finals in Miami in May.

“It’s a sad day at Bacardi as we won’t be able to celebrate the amazing work of our 41 Legacy finalists in May as planned, but our main priority is to ensure the safety of our vibrant community,” said Jacob Briars, global advocacy director for Bacardi.

“Our finalists have been working hard for the last year to prepare for the finals in Miami. We are working on plans to continue to shine a light on the 2020 finalists, their Legacy cocktails and their bars around the world and will update with more details soon,” he added.

Founded in 2008, the Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition attracts thousands of entries from bartenders around the world each year.

Mixologists are challenged to create an original Bacardi rum cocktail that will stand the test of time using no more than six ingredients. The winner sees their modern classic served at top bars around the world.
