Here’s what the stars drank at the Emmy Awards 2019

The 71st Annual Emmy Awards kicked off last night (22 September), with stars like Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Jodie Comer and Peter Dinklage picking up gongs in Los Angeles.

But really, the most important part of the event was the booze.

Much like the Oscars and the BAFTA awards, the star-studded event is particularly important for drinks giants hoping to put their premium brands in the spotlight.

We’ve listed the wineries and spirits brands that shared the limelight with Hollywood’s finest this year.

The cocktails

Diageo-owned Ketel One Vodka was used in a selection of cocktails for the event, with a menu devised by Chigaco-born mixologist and entrepreneur Charles Joly.

This year, Joly’s drinks card was composed of globally inspired ingredients, with serves like The Dapper Dragon (a combination of exotic fruit and spice), The Moonlighter (pineapple juice, cold brew and banana chai foam), The Helmsman (a non-alcoholic serve featuring citrus, papaya and coconut) and the Marvellous Mule (a twist on a classic mule).

Joly founded his own of ready-to-drink label, Crafthouse Cocktails, in 2014.

A selection of spirits from the Diageo Reserve range were also available alongside the Ketel One cocktails.

The fizz

Italian sparkling wine producer Ferrari renewed its partnership with the Emmy Awards for a fifth year.

Guests entering the Governors Ball were treated to glasses of Ferrari’s bottle-fermented Brut, as well as Ferrari Rosé and Ferrari Perlé 2012.

The VIPs also had a chance to experience the fizz pre-show, as the brand set up a dedicated “Ferrari Trento Villa” for the pre-show event.

Matteo Lunelli, president of Ferrari Trento, said: “We are genuinely proud that for the fifth consecutive year, the Television Academy has selected Ferrari Trento as the official sparkling wine of the Emmy Awards Season.

The wine

As a Californian event, it’s only natural that the state’s wineries would represent. For the fourth consecutive year, Napa Valley’s Sterling Vineyards was on-pour throughout the evening, from the ceremony itself through to dinner.

This year, the wines included 2017 Sterling Vineyards Napa Valley Chardonnay, 2017 Sterling Vineyards Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc and 2016 Sterling Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Governors Ball guests were also treated to a tasting of Sterling’s 2015 Platinum Cabernet Sauvignon; and, as a special gift, Emmy winners were handed a personalised bottle of the winery’s flagship 2015 Sterling Vineyards Iridium Cabernet Sauvignon.

To make the Iridium, winemaker Harry Hansen selected lots from vineyards spanning key Napa Valley growing regions, including Wooden Valley, Diamond Mountain, Yountville and the Hewitt Vineyard in Rutherford, while the wine itself was aged for 18 months in 66% new French oak.

Some 1,500 bottles of wine were served at the Emmy’s last night, equating to 10,000 glasses. Nice work.
