WSET marks 50th anniversary with international celebration

The WSET is marking its 50th anniversary with an international celebration of wine education, with events taking place from London to New Zealand.

The trust has awarded over 500,000 of its qualifications since its founding in 1969 and will be holding various events around the world from 9-15 September celebrating wine, spirits and sake.

Events begin in London with the WSET and a Guinness World Record attempt for the “largest ever recorded sommelierie lesson”.

There is a particularly comprehensive series of events taking place in Asia where a total of 100 are planned across the region.

In Shanghai, educator Terry Xu will will kick things off with a wine and food pairing masterclass.

More events are then taking place in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Taipei, Nanjing and Xiamen among many other cities.

WSET CEO Ian Harris commented: “Wine Education Week is a celebration of our mission to inspire and inform wine lovers across the world. With exciting events taking place everywhere from New Zealand to Thailand to Mexico and, of course, our home in the UK, I can’t think of a better way to mark WSET’s 50th anniversary and the progress we have made in wine education over the last half-century.”
