Crus Bourgeois announce 2016 selection

The official selection for the 2016 vintage of the Crus Bourgeois du Médoc has been announced, with 270 châteaux included.

In what is the 9th official selection, the 270 estates between them have produced 33 million bottles, they represent 31% of the growing area across the Médoc and 32% of production there.

AOC Médoc châteaux dominate the classification, with 123 estates and 17m bottles. AOC Haut-Médoc is the next biggest (89 properties and 12m bottles), followed by Saint-Estèphe (18), Listrac-Médoc (15), Moulis en Médoc (12), Margaux (9) and Pauillac (4).

Meanwhile, the Union of the Crus Bourgeois du Médoc is moving forward with its new classification with will come into effect in 2020 with the release of the 2018 vintage.

The classification (as reported in January of this year) will see the reintroduction of a hierarchy with properties being labelled ‘Crus Bourgeois’, Cru Bourgeois Supérieur’ or ‘Cru Bourgeois Excéptionnel’.

The new classification will be reviewed every five years.
