Trade-focused Asian competition series return in Hong Kong

A series of trade-focused wine, beer and spirits competitions will return to Hong Kong this month, after successful runs in the US, Germany, and Australia.

The Asia International Spirits Competition (AISC) and the second Asia International Wine Competition (AIWC) will return for the second edition on 26 August.

This year will also see the launch of the inaugural Asia International Beer Competition (AIBC), according to the Asian competition’s founder Adam Levy.

The AISC, AIWC and AIBC are open to all commercially produced alcohol producers from around the world for both established brands and new producers seeking distribution in the region, according to Levy.

Having founded the International Beverage Competition Group, Levy first started the New York International Spirits Competition nine years ago and expanded the trade-only competition series to include beer and wine, bringing it to Berlin and Melbourne five years ago.

The samples for the three competitions in Hong Kong will be judged by trade buyers from Australia and Asia, including mainland China, Macau and Hong Kong.

The panel will consist of retail store buyers, hotel F&B managers, distributors and importers, according to Levy.  A few of the judges already announced include Peter Nixon of Australia’s Dan Murphy’s, the head wine buyer for Wynn Macau, and Lady Penguin, a wine personality in mainland China.

All the samples will be evaluated based on different categories and price bands. Top winning sample scoring more than 96 points will be awarded a Double Gold, followed by Gold (94-95 points), Silver (92-93 points) and Bronze (86-91 points).

“I enjoy talking to wineries, breweries and distilleries. Craft makers are artists and what’s inside a bottle or a can is their canvas. I want to make sure it’s judged in the right way,” Levy commented.

The results will be announced by the competition’s media partners, and full results will also appear on the Alcohol Professor Magazine. For enquiries, please email Adam Levy adam@asiantlcomp.com.
