Burgundy and mature claret drive market up

The broader secondary fine wine market rose 1.4% in June, driven by strong demand for Burgundy and older Bordeaux vintages.

As reported yesterday, the more focused Fine Wine 100 index rose 1.1%, making a strong gain despite the poor en primeur campaign.

Now Liv-ex has reported that its Fine Wine 1000 index also posted a strong gain in June, driving the index to yet further heights. It has been in almost continual growth since spring 2016.

The best-performing sub-index of the Fine Wine 1000 in June was the Burgundy 150 which rose 1.9% and there was also strong interest in the Bordeaux Legends 50 which rose 1.7% – a sign that even if demand for this year’s 2017 futures were lacklustre, the interest in collectible and drinking vintages of Bordeaux remains highly active.

All of the sub-indices recorded gains last month although the weakest was the Bordeaux 500 which rose 0.9%.
