Waitrose enters the canned wine game

Keen to keep on top of the latest drinking trends, UK supermarket Waitrose has launched a range of canned wines in time for the festival season this summer.

Launching today at Waitrose stores across the country, the wines, comprising of an organic rosé and a Shiraz, were made by Robert Eden of Chateau Maris in the Languedoc.

The recyclable 250ml cans hold the equivalent to one large glass of wine, and are ideal for festivals, picnics and drinking on the go.

“We’re excited to bring back the trend of wine in a can. Following the success of small bottles at Waitrose last year, with sales increasing by 10%, we know our customers are looking for convenient and environmentally-friendly packaging options for wine.

“Wine in a can is growing at a rapid rate in the US and it’s only a matter of time before this catches on in the UK,” said Waitrose wine buyer Victoria Mason.

Organic wines sales are up 36% year on year at Waitrose. The Maris canned range brings the supermarket’s organic offering up to 52 different wines.

Maris Organic Shiraz and Maris Organic Rosé are priced at £3.49 each. The rosé is a blend of Syrah, Cinsault and Grenache.
