Uncorked: Marco Caschera of Vincent Girardin

Marco Caschera is the commercial director for Meursault-based domaine Vincent Girardin, which has expanded its foothold from Santenay to roughly 20 hectares of vineyards across Burgundy in mostly white wine appellations. Caschera was recently in Hong Kong for a Burgundy wine tasting hosted by its local importer Kerry Wines. Here, the vintner chats to dbHK about resisting the temptation of uncorking a wine when it’s too young, and the great white wines of Mersault.

What vintage are you?
1969.
What bottle sparked your love of wine?
When I was young, [I fell in love with] an Italian white wine from Trebbiano grape coming from the Lazio region, and later on with a Meursault.
What would you be as a wine?
A white wine with elegance and precision.Where are you happiest?
During the harvest when everything is running well and around a table sharing a bottle of wine with friends.

What’s your greatest vice?
Impatience and sometimes drinking wines too young.

Best advice you ever got?
There is no bad vintages but only bad wines even in good vintages.

Your cellar’s underwater, which bottle would you dive in and save?
I guess I will try to save them all.

What’s the best and worst thing about the wine business?
The best is the brotherhood and respect between growers, and the worst is sometimes the excess of ego in some people.

What’s on your wine bucket list?
At this moment, the sweet Sauternes wines and the crus from Beaujolais served at a cool temperature.

Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?
If it was possible, my grandmothers and grandfathers.

Personal satisfaction (Parker points – out of 100)?
When few month ago, a respectable sommelier told me that when his guests are ordering our wines, he always feel comfortable to open the bottles because there is pleasure for the guests and the wines are always speaking the truth.

Which wine would you like served at your funeral?
Definitely a white wine. A Chevalier Montrachet to bring life to those will be at my funeral.
