Consorzio DOC delle Venezie to exhibit at LWF with Wine List Confidential

Pinot Grigio is set to take centre stage at this year’s Wine List Confidential stand at the London Wine Fair, with the Consorzio Tutela Vini DOC delle Venezie set to highlight wines from the newly formed DOC, having elevated the grape from IGP status.

As part of this year’s Wine List Confidential stand (F45) at the London Wine Fair, the consorzio will be taking a stand to highlight wines emerging from Italy’s newest DOC, which has seen one of its best-known grapes, Pinot Grigio, awarded its own DOC.

Over three days, 60 wines from the Delle Venezie DOC will be available to taste. Created in 2017, the DOC covers the Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Trentino-Alto Adige and Veneto regions, and permits the use of Chardonnay, Friulano, Garganega, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Verduzzo.

On Monday, 21 May at 11am, Patrick Schmitt MW, editor-in-chief of the drinks business, will give a short overview of this new DOC, together with President Albino Armani, and also reveal which of its wines won a medal in this year’s Pinot Grigio Masters 2018.

“The DOC has been created to certify the origin and traceability of the most exported Italian white wine in the world, with the ambition to bring to the consumer a different quality of the Italian style Pinot Grigio based on key points like the reduction of yields per hectare and a rigorous chain of biochemical controls and organoleptic analysis. It is with these basic elements that we are building recognition of the DOC delle Venezie wines on international markets,” said Albino Armani, president of Consorzium DOC delle Venezie.

Overall, 18 wines received a medal in this year’s Pinot Grigio Global Masters, all of which will be available to taste at the Wine List Confidential stand across the three days.

“The results of this wine competition confirm the qualitative path of our winemakers, and also offers valuable support for our international promotion strategy dedicated to the affirmation of the Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie DOC style,” added Armani.

“These results offer us an opportunity to talk about the quality of the new DOC in the UK, which is very important for us. We really think that in a global, competitive and demanding market such as the UK, where wines from all over the world are compared, the proposal of a different and innovative-style of Pinot Grigio is capable of changing the way in which consumers make their purchases, confirming the appeal and authenticity of our wines.”

In line with EU standards, Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie DOC will be required to be at least 85% Pinot Grigio. The remainder may be any white grape allowed to be grown in the region, which includes Chardonnay, Friulano (aka Tai), Garganega, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Bianco, and Verduzzo, among others.

Sparkling Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie DOC must be tank-fermented, and must contain less than 32g/L of residual sugar.

The protected geographical indication formerly known as the IGP delle Venezie will now be known as the IGP Trevenezie.
